For those of you that know me you will know that I love nothing more than a challenge and the opportunity to make a difference for those who are struggling around the world.
My husband and his old school friends recently visited the Federal Government College in Warri Nigeria for old time sake only to find that a place that holds many happy memories and important life lessons is in desperate need of help.
Seeing the pictures they took that day then dropping my daughter to school a little later made me realize how very fortunate our children are in this country. I strongly feel that ALL children all over the world have a basic human right to a good education and a chance in life to succeed.
FGC Warri was one of the 3 unity schools founded by the Nigerian government in 1966, when the country was on the brink of a break-up.
The School was founded on the principle of unity in diversity that created a platform for children from different ethnic backgrounds to interact, socialize and acquire knowledge.
The unpleasant state of the School today can be attributed to so many active factors including endemic corruption, mismanagement, inadequate funding, declining standards, moral decadence, emergence of elitist private schools etc.
I am soon to contact the principle of the school to discuss further the extent of help needed. There is still a chance of the School reclaiming its past glory due if only we could motivate the existing workforce, parents and teachers alike. The school on whole needs equipment in all areas like the science labs and the main hall has much work to be done.
For now please read the list below to see if you have any unwanted items that may help. Library equipment Books for the library, A Book and or 10p is what we need, because we need your help to cover the costs including shipping books by the container-load to the children in Nigeria. For every 10p donation Code Red Hair will add a further 5p to make shipping possible. Of course the books are main priority so please, please keep them coming.
(Books should be in good condition to be attractive to readers. Books you’ve read are fine, as long as they are in good condition. The books must not make the young people who get them feel that we are saying, "Any old thing will do." Factual books and stories should be up-to-date, well illustrated, and accurate.)
